RegularPripyat's riversideThe goal of the project is to improve the environmental situation in the Ptich river basin (tributary of Pripyat’ river), involvement of local population and authorities into nature protection activities, awareness rising and providing more clean water to the population. One the main tasks is to change situation with municipal waste collection and utilization in settlement Kopatkevichi by separate waste collection, its storage at the newly constructed waste collection places and removal to the landfill. Another priority task is preparatory works for reinforcement of the Ptich riverside in order to prevent the flooding of houses. The implementation of this project will create the improved living conditions for the Kopatkevichi population; help to create the active environment protection position. Regular”Modernization of boiler of outpatient clinic in village Raitsa (Korelichi district, Grodno oblast)”The goal of the project is to reduce the volume of green house gases due to the modification of the boiler of outpatient clinic in village Raitsa (Korelichi district, Grodno oblast) and switching it to the usage of local renewable fuel. The achieved experience is planned to be spread into other outpatient clinics of Grodno oblast with similar conditions. RegularCapacity building for the development of ecological tourism in the basin of the Ulla River, Vitebsk oblastProject goals and objectives: The primary goal of the project is to demonstrate, by the example of the Ulla River basin, the role of ecological tourism as a means to protect landscape and biological diversity of river flood plains. (Red Book of Belarus), as an indicator species for High Conservation Value Farmlands (HCVF).he project goal -is the research of the population state of the protected species of mammals - European Hamster (Cricetus Cricetus L.), as an indicator species for High Conservation Value Farmlands (HCVF), with the aim of including HCVF into the structure of the Ecological Network of Belarus and identification and introduction of conservation measures for European Hamster in the project region.
Aims of the project:
1. To evaluate the historical and present distribution of European Hamster in the project region by means of data survey (questionnaires) among the residents/local population and workers of agricultural enterprises.
2. To map and analyze spatial distribution of the remaining local groups of Hamster and to evaluate the possibility of using the data on the distribution and population state of European Hamster in Belarus as a criteria for the development of regional Ecological Network.
3. To evaluate the possibility of using the data on the distribution and population state of the local groups of European Hamster as an indicator species for High Conservation Value Farmlands (HCVF).
4. To identify the key threats for European Hamster in the project region and work out the Action Plan for conservation of European Hamster population, as an indicator species for High Conservation Value Farmlands (HCVF). Pilot the implementation of the Action Plan at a number of agricultural in Polesie, Brest region.
5. To prepare full project application to be submitted to SGP GEF NSC.
6. To share experience on conservation of European Hamster with other agricultural enterprises which have stable population groups of the species.
7. To promote the development of the concept of High Conservation Value Farmlands (HCVF) and inclusion of HCVF into the Ecological Network of Belarus.

Tasks of the project:
1. To organize removal of the bushes (at flood-plain parts suffering from bushes growth and where rehabilitation measures are needed) by the means of local population bushes harvesting as a fuel and material for local handicrafts;
2. To create conditions for the development of providing eco-tourist services by the local population;
3. To provide support and further development of local handicrafts (willow-tatting in particular);
4. To develop the design and construct necessary infrastructure of eco-path for tourists’ visits of nature landscapes, vegi- and bio- sites of flood-plain meadows, demonstration of applied nature protection technologies;

RegularReduction of CO2 emissions by means of electric energy and solid fuel savings in the Children Rehabilitation and Health Center “Ptich”The project aims at reduction of CO2 emissions by means of savings of electric energy and solid fuel for the purposes of street lighting and hot water supply for the diner on the territory of the Center.
The tasks to be realized are as follows:
1. to carry out modernization of the system of the Center’s street lightning;
2. to carry out modernization of the system of hot water supply for the Center’s diner; to carry out cleaning of the boilers and heating system;
3. to launch an information campaign.
The results to be expected are as follows:
- Modernization of the system of the Center’s street lighting is completed. It includes installation of up-to-date energy-efficient lighting appliances and the system of automatic regulation of lighting. As a result the Center is to save considerable amount of electric energy annually.
- Modernization of the hot water supply system for the Center’s diner is completed. It includes installation of the solar water heating system. As a result the Center is to spend annually 100 m3 of solid fuel less than usually.
- Wide information campaign is launched. It allows to accumulate and spread out positive experience of the project.
- Reduction of expenses for electric energy and solid fuel allows to use saved funds for other urgent needs of the Center.

The achievement of the project goal will be confirmed by the following indicators: - Activities on restoration of damaged hydrological regime and sphagnum associations of the mi eastern part of the mire Galoe will be justified, developed and implemented; - value of resources of mire ecosystems such as cranberry, biodiversity, environment making resources, recreational and esthetics resources will be increased in comparison with the current condition; - possibility of peat fires will be decreased; - decrease of peat fires will allow to avoid volley emissions of carbon dioxide into atmosphere. Rapid dissemination of sphagnum on the p degraded parts of the mire will allow to restore functions of the mire related to sequestration of carbon dioxide from atmosphere. Expected long term results: • Identifying the organizational and logistic schemes for the collection, packaging and disposal of PCB-containing waste outside the Republic of Belarus, operating based on the current distribution of PB-containing waste among enterprises owners of such wastes in the Republic of Belarus, as well as the requirements of national legislation and the provisions of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent organic Pollutants and the Basel Convention on the Control of transboundary Movements of Hazardous wastes and their Disposal. • In accordance with certain schemes for collecting, packaging and disposal outside the Republic of Belarus of PCB-containing waste – selection and signing of contracts with foreign companies specialized in the elimination of PCBs and with national company that will collect PCB-containing wastes from enterprises related to the production and processing of food or feed, for farher transfere for elimination outside of the Republic of Belarus. • Making contracts by these companies necessary with owners of PCB-containing wastes on packaging, transport and disposal outside of the Republic of Belarus; •Companies PCBs-owners allocated cofinancing for wastes disposal in the amount necessary to cover the costs of transport and packaging in containers suitable for the transportation of hazardous wastes; • Elimination of PCB-containing wastes in areas associated with the production and processing of food or feed with the largest environmental risks and risks to human health, in quantities corresponding to the inventory data (according to the results of evaluation of tenders on collection, transportation and disposal must be disposed more than 200 PCB-containing capacitors and at least one transformer from at least 20 owners of such wastes throughout the Republic of Belarus).BelarusChemicals and Waste2014

Regular“Implementation of energy-efficient street lightning technologies in Lubcha settlement, Novogrudsk district”.Project goal – Improving illumination of Lubcha settlement through replacement of mercury lamps with LED lamps. Project tasks: 1. Purchasing and installation of LED lighting, photoconductive elements and other equipment for street lighting control in the Lubcha settlement. 2. Informational work on dissemination of experience in the implementation of LED lighting in rural settlements. Expected long term results: 1. More than 4 tons of CO2 will be less emitted due to the replacement of mercury lamps with LED ones; 2. Living conditions in Lubcha will become more attractive to the public; 3. Replacement of 136 DRL-125 lamps with LED ones; 4. 75% of the population of the settlment informed about the importance of replacing mercury lamps with LED lamps in order to reduce the impact of climate change, as well as the possibility of using LED and energy-saving lamps in the domestic environment; 5. Preliminary saving street lighting budget will be about 65 million BYR due to the using of LED lamps according to prices of 2013. This project will allow to provide public with information on the POPs issue and promotion of the Stockholm Convention on POPs in the Republic of Belarus through the active involvement of the work of environmental NGOs, scientific and educational institutions, local communities and other interested organizations. In the course of the project it is planned to eliminate existing gaps in information in the field of public education on POPs, in particular on the new POPs, additionally included in the list of the Stockholm convention. The aim of this project is to increase public awareness on POPs issue in the implementation of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. To achieve this goal the following tasks need to be addressed: 1. Updating the website on the issue of persistent organic pollutants. 2. Solar collector and accumulator tank are assembled and installed to supply hot water to the sanatorium canteen. 2. High-performance water de-ironing station is installed. The extent of water de-ironing will reach 0.3 mg per decimeter in comparison with the present 1.34 mg per decimeter. These measures will allow to economize 30 546 kilowatt of electricity energy and 437, 6 Giga-calories of heat energy. 3. StrategicREMEDIATION OF SANDPITS ON THE TERRITORY OF MINSK REGION AS A METHOD OF RESTORING DEGRADED LANDS AND CONTRIBUTION TO MITIGATING THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGEThe overall aim of the project: Remediation of abandoned sandpits (unauthorized waste dumps) and prevention of soil degradation on territories of Minsk region through afforestation and meadow formation and implementation activities on prevention possibility of their appearance in future. To achieve this goal following tasks need to be addressed and results are expected: 1. Establishment of the system for the prevention the formation and use of sandpits as unauthorized waste dumps. •Unauthorized waste dumps in abandoned sandpits are eliminated by volunteers from the residents of adjacent areas of village councils and members of associations gardeners with the participation of organizations involved in the project; •New illegal waste dumps are not appeared at the territories adjacent to the villages and associations gardeners; •Volunteers from the local communities provide the public monitoring and prevention of illegal dumping; •At least 5 village councils of Minsk region are involved into project implementation activities. 2. Remediation of lands, followed by planting forests and grass cover on degraded lands •At least 22,3 hectares of degraded lands are restored. Land is returned back into the economy and used in ecologically sustainable way, contributing to the climate change negative impact mitigation; •At least 40% of the local councils population involved into the project implementation; •The main result of the project for the local communities became the elimination of not less than 5 unauthorized waste dumps (landfills) on their territories, as sources of increased environmental hazard and injury. 3. To achieve this goal the following tasks need to be addressed :
1. To create the conditions for the development of service activities in the field of environmental education, eco-tourism administration of the reserve "Middle Pripyat" in Stolin district boundaries;
2. To upgrade buildings with energy-efficient technology for the operation of environmental education center, demonstration of applied environmental technologies;
3. Undertake outreach activities aimed at raising awareness of the local population about the importance of preservation of unique natural complexes of the reserve "Middle Pripyat", the need for environmentally sound use of resources.
4. Develop and produce a combined arrangement of environmental-sky route based on the assessment of natural, historical and cultural heritage reserve "Middle Pripyat" and a buffer zone in the Stolin district.

Expected results of the project

- Created the material and information base for environmental education of schoolchildren and tourists in the reserve of national importance "Pripyat", the demonstration of environmental technologies. Coverage of schoolchildren who visit the visitor center reserve 70% of the Stolin district, and 30% Luninets district. During the Project 2000 students.
- Extended visit to the reserve center, equipped with modern heating system of the building, insulation carried out the building with modern heat insulation, introduced a system of low-power illumination facilities, reduced emission of CO2 into the atmosphere, by reducing the power consumption of the network on water heating.

Replace window units in the Lyceum dormitory for energy-saving glazed widnows 2. Reconstruct Heat points, set thermo regulators, replaced heat exchangers by more efficient 3. To carry on informational campaign Expected results 1. Window blocks of dormitory are replaced. As a result, every year 133m3 of wood will be saved. 2. Reconstruction of heat substations with the installation of thermoregulators, replacement heat exchangers will allow to save 117m3 fuel additionally. Cumulative annual effect from the project implementation is expected at saving lavel of 250m3 of wood, which is equivalent of 10.8 tons greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 equivalent). RegularObsolete pharmaceuticals in the environment: developing a sustainable approachHundreds of different active pharmaceutical compounds are being discovered in waterways all over the world. Concern is increasing about the harm these might be doing to human health and the environment. Pharmaceuticals for human and veterinary use are entering the environment during their production, consumption and disposal. The active ingredients of pharmaceuticals are designed to stimulate a response in humans and animals at low concentrations. Moreover, pharmaceutical substances are often engineered so that they remain unchanged during their passage through the body. Unfortunately, this stability means that they also persist outside the body and, as a consequence, can build up in the environment. Although levels are usually too low to result in acute effects such as organ damage, there are many cases globally where drugs have had drastic effects in the environment. In Belarus there is a lack of policy regulation of management of obsolete pharmaceuticals, and basically there is no system of collection and management of obsolete pharmaceuticals generated by public. The situation is also characterized by a relatively low public awareness about the linkage between obsolete pharmaceuticals and the environmental protection. The goal of the project is to put the topic of obsolete pharmaceuticals to the environmental and public health agenda in Belarus Specific objectives of the project are the following: 1. To study the issue of pharmaceuticals in the environment of Belarus and best practices of dealing with the topic globally. 2. To organize consultative process to discuss and propose the solution for the problem 3. To raise awareness of public, health care sector, industry, pharmacies, and regulators about the issue of pharmaceuticals in the environment 4. By 1 ton decreased methane emissions only by experimental sites composting plant residues. In the future, after 3-5 years it is planned to achieve emission reductions through composting plant residues, especially in households with large plots of land, more than 1,000 tons of methane; 2. RegularThe introduction of energy saving technologies and renewable energy sources to reduce CO2 emissions for organization of tourism in the National biological reserve "Sporovsky."Based on planning grant results and design estimates the goal of the project is to create energy efficient tourist center and to perform the work on introduction of energy saving technologies and renewable energy sources to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in the organization of tourism in the national biological reserve "Sporovsky." Objectives of the project: 1. Creating energy efficient tourist building in the national biological reserve "Sporovsky"; 2. Holding information campaign aimed at raising awareness of the public and government agencies to the problems of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Expected results 1. Insulation of the building is made: held thermal rehabilitation of 112 m2 of walls, replaced with a new five window units, heat losses are reduced by a factor of 2.7, resulting in an annual savings of $ 1,250 dollars. 2. All lamps are replaced by energy efficient (LED), the consumption of electricity for lighting is reduced by 10 times. If we consider that the emission of greenhouse gases during firing energy production is about 1.4 kg per 1 kWh, the greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by at least 80% - 2.5 tons per year with savings up to $ 200. 3. Installed gasification boiler running on fuel derived from biomass briquettes marshes. CO2 emissions were reduced by 100% - 37.5 tons per year. Savings - $ 2,000. 4. Installed thermal collector to heat water. RegularThe use of solar energy to provide hot water in a children's rehabilitation center "Nadezhda"Children's Rehabilitation and Recreation Center “Nadeshda” is a sanatorium-and-spa institution where annually more than 5,000 children who live in areas contaminated with radionuclides from Chernobyl improve their health. Since the very beginning of its operation it’s purposefully worked to ensure that its business activities are being implemented on the principles of sustainable development. “Nadeshda” uses two types of fuel to obtain thermal energy: stove fuel ( 180 thousands of liters per year) and firewood (870 cubic meters per year). In order to reduce the consumption of hydrocarbon fuels and, consequently, decrease CO2 emissions, the use of solar energy is considered. Within the implementation of Planning Grant BLR/SGP/OP5/CORE/CC/12/03 «Exploring the use of solar energy in CRRC “Nadeshda” the project solution was prepared on installation of solar collector plant with a capacity of 1080 kW/m2 on the roof of a wood stock of a boiler house to transfer thermal energy to the overall Center’s heat network. The planned installation will annually save 35-40 thousand liters of stove fuel, which is 15% of used stove fuel today, and, accordingly, reduce CO2 emissions by 75 tons per year. Despite the considerable work done by Children's Center "Nadeshda" for the development of renewable and alternative energy sources, there is still sizeable reserve for substitution of conventional energy use by more environmental friendly. Besides technical and resource-saving issues, the ones concerned with environmental education are major focus of educational work with children where children become familiar with the objects of the Centre, including the boiler, the biological purification plant, a solar collector, as well as acquire practical skills on environment conservation and protection. As a result, these children will spread out the ideas of sustainable development and consumption among their families and friends.
